Child hospitalised after strong winds halt Kamchatka rafting trip

An 11-year-old child was hospitalised with signs of frostbite after strong winds stranded a rafting group in Kamchatka on October 11, regional investigators said.

The group comprised 11 people, including nine children aged 11 to 15. They were travelling on two rafts along the Prilivnaya River, through Lake Prilivnoye, towards Khalaktyrsky Beach.

When the wind strengthened, the group could neither continue along the route nor return to its starting point. The participants waited for rescuers beside a fire on the lakeshore.

One child’s feet became wet and signs of frostbite developed. Rescuers insulated the child, evacuated them from the difficult terrain on a quad bike and handed them over to medical personnel.

The regional Investigative Committee is conducting an inquiry to establish the circumstances of the trip. The report does not specify a final diagnosis or the child’s condition after admission.
