Jerry Jones remains open to trades after Cowboys lose to Buccaneers

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has not ruled out further trades following a 24-16 home loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is willing to use future draft picks for a player who can help both now and in subsequent seasons.

The October 8 game left Dallas at 2-3 and gave Tampa Bay its first victory after four losses. Jalon Daniels, making his second start in place of injured Baker Mayfield, completed 19 of 25 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown. Bucky Irving rushed for a career-high 165 yards on 21 carries.

Jones acknowledged that Tampa Bay was the better team but said the Cowboys were not giving up. He wants to weigh a player's future value in considering a deal, noting that draft selections also carry uncertainty. That is a willingness to assess opportunities rather than an announcement of a new trade.

Dallas has already acquired cornerback Joey Porter Jr. from the Pittsburgh Steelers for a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-rounder. He missed the home game against Tampa Bay with flu-like symptoms. CBS Sports lists four remaining Dallas picks for 2027, six for 2028 and all seven of its own 2029 selections.

A CBS Sports analysis proposes three possible additions without reporting negotiations for any of them. Los Angeles Chargers edge rusher Tuli Tuipulotu is presented as a way to improve pressure on quarterbacks. Dallas ranks eighth-worst in pressure rate at 32.7% and fifth-worst in sack rate at 3.4%.

Tuipulotu, 24, is in the final year of his rookie contract. He recorded 13 sacks and 70 pressures in 2025 and has two sacks and 14 pressures through the first four games this season, according to CBS Sports. The author links a possible trade to whether the Chargers decide to move players after starting 0-4.

Another candidate in the analysis is Miami Dolphins linebacker Jordyn Brooks. His three-year, $48 million extension includes $35 million guaranteed and runs through the 2029 season. CBS Sports says Dallas allows an average of 168.4 rushing yards per game, while PFF ranks Brooks fourth among linebackers against the run.

The third option is Denver Broncos receiver and returner Marvin Mims Jr., considered primarily as a special-teams addition. Mims led the NFL with 15.7 yards per punt return in 2024 and collected 452 punt-return yards in 2025. KaVontae Turpin's lost fumble on a kickoff return against Tampa Bay is among the reasons the author discusses a replacement.

All three names are suggestions in the analysis rather than confirmed Dallas targets. The Cowboys next play at the Green Bay Packers on October 18. Before then, the club can assess its roster after the defeat and weigh potential additions against the cost of future selections.
