DA puts safety, jobs and housing at centre of Cape Town rally

Democratic Alliance leaders pledged safer communities, jobs and more affordable housing at a campaign rally in Belhar, Cape Town, on 10 October ahead of the 4 November local elections.

Party leader and Cape Town mayoral candidate Geordin Hill-Lewis told supporters at Erica Park that improving safety and investing in communities would help attract investment and employment. Those remarks outlined the party's campaign promises, rather than newly approved projects.

Western Cape party leader Tertius Simmers said he hoped voters would give the DA outright majorities in municipalities. He identified Cape Town's high cost of living as a priority and called for mixed-income housing developments in the city and other urban centres.

Simmers described social housing as a rental option and also highlighted homes for buyers in city centres. The rally drew thousands of supporters, according to SABC. The speeches presented the party's proposed priorities for the next five years.
