Darmanin reports 2513 people taken into custody after French unrest
French police took 2513 people into custody following unrest during weekend demonstrations, Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin told TF1.
More than 500 detainees will appear in court in the coming days, the minister said. He also reported that 67 people had been placed in prison.
The protests began in mid-September with secondary school students in the Paris suburbs demanding better school conditions. People protesting rising prices later joined them as demonstrations spread to other regions.
About 550 thousand people participated in the nationwide demonstration on October 17, according to France's Interior Ministry. During unrest in Paris and Marseille, rioters smashed shop windows and took goods from stores.
