South Africa reports readiness for matric exams and measures against disruption

South Africa's Department of Basic Education outlined preparations for the 2026 matric examinations on October 11. At a Pretoria briefing, officials urged parents and communities to support pupils and help prevent disruption.

Deputy Minister Makgabo Reginah Mhaule said the department was working with municipalities and other stakeholders on practical problems, including water supply disruptions in some areas. She said cooperation between authorities and residents was needed to ensure examinations could proceed normally.

Mhaule said pupils and the examination system were ready, and universities were prepared to receive school-leavers. She asked communities to avoid making final assessments unnecessarily difficult for learners.

Minister Siviwe Gwarube told the same briefing that examination materials had been prepared and checked. According to eNCA, the department strengthened security during their production and distribution. A round-the-clock hotline is available for reports of suspicious activity. Officials also outlined contingency plans for severe weather and other operational disruptions.
