Donald Trump urges Minnesota officials to request federal help

President Donald Trump called on Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey to seek federal assistance, accusing state officials of inaction in a Truth Social post targeting Somali immigrants.

Trump said the federal government could intervene if help was needed. He did not specify what form that assistance would take or explain what action he wanted residents to undertake when he urged them to fight back.

He alleged widespread violence and disorder and blamed local authorities. His statements about the Somali community and allegations against Walz were the president's claims, rather than findings established by the announcement.

The dispute follows ICE's Metro Surge operation, launched in Minnesota in late December 2025 to identify, detain and deport migrants without lawful status. Trump threatened in January to invoke the Insurrection Act, which permits the deployment of military units.

MPR News reported on Oct. 9 that mosque leaders were concerned about safety following the president's comments. The post does not establish that a new federal intervention has been agreed with Minnesota authorities or has begun.
