India seizes about 5.832 kg of gold and arrests two suspects
India's Directorate of Revenue Intelligence said on October 11 that it seized about 5.832 kg of gold near Visakhapatnam. Officials valued it at 8.98 crore rupees and arrested two people.
Officers intercepted a car travelling from Kolkata to Hyderabad on October 9 after receiving specific intelligence. The agency described the cargo as foreign-origin, 24-carat gold.
The gold bars were found in a specially built concealed compartment beneath the front passenger's footwell. The agency said the metal had been smuggled across the India-Bangladesh border.
Both suspects appeared in court and were remanded to judicial custody. The gold was seized under the Customs Act, 1962. Investigators are working to establish its origin, final destination and the organiser behind the shipment.
