Hughes targets New Zealand return against Australia after two years lost to injuries

Jahrome Hughes says the pain of New Zealand’s 2022 World Cup semi-final defeat is driving him ahead of a planned international return against Australia in Sydney on October 15.

Thursday’s Rugby League World Cup opener is set to be the Melbourne Storm halfback’s first appearance for the Kiwis since 2023. The 32-year-old said injuries had kept him out over the past two years and that returning to camp made him feel like a child again.

New Zealand lost 16-14 to Australia in Leeds in 2022. Hughes scored a try and stopped Josh Addo-Carr from scoring, but still dwells on a missed chance in the 73rd minute. His kick towards Peta Hiku failed to produce a try, and the Kiwis could not turn their late pressure into victory.

Hughes said he uses that memory as motivation rather than treating it solely as a setback. He also recalled how New Zealand’s 2008 world title inspired him as a child and said another trophy could have a similar effect on young supporters.

The halfback is preparing under coach Stacey Jones. Australia’s Cameron Munster, his Storm teammate, is among the players he could face, while coach Kevin Walters still has Mitch Moses, Tom Dearden and Sam Walker competing for the No.7 jersey.
