The European Commission said at a press briefing that it had received no formal invitation to join the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization, or WAICO.

Rapporteur had reported, citing three diplomats, that China offered the Commission membership. The outlet said the Commission informed national experts about the offer on Tuesday.

Answering Rapporteur's question, Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier said no formal invitation had been received. He reiterated the Commission's position that AI risks need to be addressed with international partners.

Russia, China and another 27 countries signed the agreement establishing WAICO on July 16, 2026. Based in Shanghai, the organization is intended to promote international cooperation on safe and accessible artificial intelligence.
