NSW plans independent costings for One Nation’s election promises

The New South Wales government said on October 12 it would seek legislative changes giving One Nation access to independent costings before the March 2027 state election.

The proposal would bring One Nation into the same process as Labor and the Liberal-National Coalition. The Parliamentary Budget Office would assess proposed policies and publish statements on their budget impact before voting opens.

The government also plans to increase the office’s resources to handle the additional work. It said the legislation would proceed only with support from the Liberal and National parties in both houses of parliament.

Treasurer Daniel Mookhey argued that voters should receive independent information about One Nation’s promises alongside the established parties’ plans. The announcement sets out a proposed amendment, so access has not yet been granted through an enacted change.
