Father and daughter detained in Sochi receive 18- and seven-year sentences

The Southern District Military Court has sentenced D. V. Mishanin and his daughter O. D. Mishanina to 18 and seven years in prison respectively, Russia’s Federal Security Service said in a statement reported by RIA Novosti on October 12.

Mishanin, born in 1971, is to serve the first five years in prison and the remainder in a strict-regime penal colony. His daughter, born in 2007, was sentenced to a general-regime colony.

The FSB said the case involved treason and preparation to participate in an organisation designated terrorist under Russian law. It cited Article 275 and provisions of Articles 30 and 205.5 of Russia’s Criminal Code.

According to the agency’s account, the pair contacted a representative of a Ukrainian organisation through Telegram and collected and transmitted information about Russian service personnel and military facilities. The FSB also said they planned to travel to Ukraine to join fighting against Russia.

They were detained in Sochi while attempting to leave the country, the agency said. The reports do not give the date of that detention or the defendants’ response to the allegations.
