Five evacuated in Koreiz as rescuers use rope crossing to reach girl

Rescuers evacuated five people after a river flooded Koreiz near Yalta, including a girl helped to safety using a rope crossing, emergency authorities said. Two evacuees were taken to temporary accommodation.

Heavy rain turned the river into a torrent that damaged retaining walls and sections of its channel and flooded several properties. Emergency rescue work continues in the settlement.

More than 160 personnel and 20 vehicles were deployed. Rescuers said rain and winds of up to 21 metres per second were complicating the response.

Crews are building temporary barriers and redirecting the river channel to divert the flow of water.
