Indian Army destroys five landmines near Line of Control in Poonch

Five landmines were found and safely destroyed near the border fence at Basoni Top in Poonch district, officials said on October 10.

An Army patrol discovered two mines on the morning of October 10 near the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. Three more explosives had been found in the same area on October 9, The Hindu reported, citing officials.

The Army's bomb disposal squad carried out controlled explosions to destroy the devices. Officials said the operation caused no damage.

Minefields in forward areas along the Line of Control form part of a system intended to prevent infiltration across the border. Heavy rainfall can move mines away from their original positions.

That displacement can create a potential hazard wherever the devices surface after rain. The account of these five discoveries did not identify a specific reason why the mines were near the fence.
