Flamengo wears protest slogan in match against Santos

The club replaced its main sponsor's logo with the slogan “Proibir não é proteger” (“Prohibiting is not protecting”). The protest took place during a Brazilian Championship match.

The game against Santos was played Thursday at Vila Belmiro in the 29th round. CNN Brasil reported that the slogan appeared in the central spot on Flamengo's shirt, where the main sponsor's name is normally displayed. The phrase had also appeared on advertising boards at other games in the round.

The slogan is promoted by the National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL) and the Brazilian Institute for Responsible Gaming (IBJR). Flamengo president Luiz Eduardo Baptista opposes the provisional measure on betting. Santos did not take part in the protest and did not display the slogan on its shirt.

Before the match, UOL reported that the club was still discussing whether to use a protest shirt. CNN Brasil later reported that the team took the field wearing it. Betano, which had occupied Flamengo's main sponsorship position, was among companies affected by the ban, according to the report.
