Former Switzerland defender Ramon Vega says he will run for FIFA president

Ramon Vega said he plans to challenge Gianni Infantino in next year’s FIFA presidential election, promising reforms and a renewed effort to rebuild trust in the governing body.

Vega, 55, played for Cagliari and Tottenham and represented Switzerland. He moved into finance after ending his football career in 2004.

He said his campaign would focus on uniting football’s global community and modernising FIFA. Vega also criticised the organisation’s current leadership, saying weak governance had damaged its credibility and eroded trust among football stakeholders.

This is not his first attempt to enter the race. Vega announced a bid in 2015 after former FIFA president Sepp Blatter was suspended. In 2019, he again sought to challenge Infantino but did not secure the backing of five member associations, the minimum required to be included among the candidates. FIFA has 211 member associations.

Infantino has led FIFA since 2016 and announced in April that he would seek another term in 2027. Vega said leadership disputes should not come at the expense of players, coaches, referees and fans.
