Four personnel of India’s Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were injured in an accidental blast during the disposal of unserviceable and leftover explosives in Sukma district, Chhattisgarh, police said.

The incident took place on the evening of October 8 near the Elarmadgu security camp, within the jurisdiction of Bheji police station. An Ammunition Technical Team from the CRPF’s 50th battalion had arrived from Jagdalpur to inspect camps in the area and safely dispose of the explosives.

The operation was being carried out under prescribed safety protocols near Bodrajpadar Nala, about 200 metres from the camp. An official said a fragment of an explosive accidentally flew off, landed nearby and detonated.

The injured personnel had been deployed for security and the disposal operation. They were identified as Assistant Sub-Inspectors M K Tiwari and Anees Khan, Inspector Amarnath Mishra and Head Constable Kuldeep Raj. Both assistant sub-inspectors sustained serious injuries.

The personnel received first aid and were taken to the government hospital in Konta, where they were undergoing treatment. Arrangements were being made to transfer the two seriously injured men to another facility for advanced care.
