Gomez’s 51-metre goal is Premier League’s longest-range strike since 2017
Brighton midfielder Diego Gomez scored against Crystal Palace from 51 metres. Opta says it was the longest-range goal in the Premier League since November 2017.
The Paraguay international struck from midfield in the seventh minute as Brighton went on to beat Crystal Palace 5–0.
The previous goal from farther out in the competition was Wayne Rooney’s effort for Everton against West Ham in November 2017. That strike was measured at 58 metres.
Brighton coach Fabian Hurzeler said Gomez had attempted a similar shot against Sunderland in the previous round, but the wind had hindered him. Brighton won that match 2–0 on 10 October.
Associated Press compared Gomez’s strike with David Beckham’s famous halfway-line goal. Beckham scored that goal for Manchester United against Wimbledon in the 1996/97 season.
