Milan police take 160 people to headquarters after renewed unrest

Police took 160 young people to their headquarters after renewed unrest in Milan on Sunday, Corriere della Sera reported. Sources in the public-security department told the newspaper that 80% were minors.

Groups entered the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II during the evening and smashed a window at the Rinascente department store in Piazza Duomo. The newspaper also reported stones thrown at the windows of a McDonald's inside the gallery.

Groups then moved towards the square outside La Scala theatre, overturning bins and bicycles. Police reinforced their presence outside the theatre.

The renewed disorder followed Saturday's demonstration against rising living costs. Calls to gather again near the Duomo circulated on social media from Sunday morning.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called a meeting on public order for the following day, Corriere della Sera reported.
