Arizona House candidate Greene-Placentia describes response to sexual assault allegation

U.S. House candidate Bernadette Greene-Placentia says hundreds of women have shared their experiences with her since she publicly alleged she was raped. She described the response in a CBS News interview published October 10.

Greene-Placentia estimated that about 70% of the women who contacted her said they had never reported their own assaults to police. That estimate describes messages she received, rather than a statistical measure of sexual violence.

A police report cited by CBS News places the alleged attack on August 14 between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. Greene-Placentia filed her report on August 31. The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office confirmed an investigation but declined to provide further details.

Greene-Placentia says two men assaulted her while she was working on campaign materials. She told CBS News she chose to speak publicly because she wanted to support other women who had experienced sexual violence.

The Democrat is running in Arizona's 8th Congressional District against Republican Rep. Abe Hamadeh. Her opponent called for a thorough investigation, including efforts to locate any surveillance footage.
