Bernadette Greene-Placentia said she was attacked in August while walking to a damaged campaign sign in Sun City. The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office confirmed it received a report and is investigating.
The Democratic candidate in Arizona's 8th Congressional District told ABC News the attack happened at about 2 a.m. on Aug. 14. She said an unknown assailant struck her and knocked her unconscious. When she awoke, she realized she was being raped.
Greene-Placentia said she reported the assault to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. The office confirmed to ABC News that a report was filed on Aug. 31 and that the investigation is ongoing. It declined to provide further details.
A campaign spokesperson said Greene-Placentia chose to speak publicly to support other survivors of sexual assault and asked that her privacy be respected. Her campaign manager told ABC that she was away from campaign activities for two days after the attack and later told colleagues what had happened. No suspect has been identified in the reports.
