Newly declassified government decisions detail sums earmarked in 2018–2020 to acquire several fertility clinics and the properties they needed to operate.
Hungary has declassified several government documents from 2018 to 2020 concerning the transfer of fertility treatment centers into state ownership. The published decisions allocated 2.52 billion forints for KAÁLI Intézet Kft., 2.1 billion forints for KAÁLI REK Kft. and 1 billion forints for Pannon Reprodukciós Intézet Kft.
The documents separately set prices for properties needed to operate the acquired companies. A site on Istenhegyi Road in Budapest was priced at 1.1 billion forints plus VAT. Buildings in Győr and Szeged were valued at 560 million forints, while the Tapolca property was set at 300 million forints plus VAT. Another decision put the combined purchase price of the institutions at slightly more than 7 billion forints.
The Orbán government valued a 100% stake in Forgács Intézet at 2.639 billion forints, including two properties. It spent 762 million forints to acquire all of Várandó Egészségügyi Szolgáltató Kft. and Sterilitás Egészségügyi Ellátó Kft.
Plans to bring the clinics under state control became public in December 2019, when a government decision placed six fertility centers under state management. In June 2021, parliament passed a law that barred such institutions from operating outside the new system from 2022. In the following months, one of the three remaining private clinics also moved into state ownership, while two others were unable to continue operating.
Since July 2022, assisted reproductive treatment in Hungary has been available only at state institutions. The new pricing details emerged after the government reviewed previously classified decisions.
