Hurkacz hands Djokovic his first early exit in Shanghai

Hubert Hurkacz beat Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-3 in the second round of the Shanghai Masters, ending the Serb’s run before the quarter-finals for the first time at the tournament.
It was Djokovic’s 12th appearance in Shanghai. He had won the tournament four times and had previously reached at least the quarter-finals on every visit. The loss to Hurkacz, ranked No. 34 in the world, was his first defeat in his opening match at the event.
Hurkacz took both sets 6-4, 6-3 to advance. The Pole will next face the winner of the match between China’s Zhou Yi and Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti.
Djokovic is ranked eighth in the world. Earlier this week, he won his 102nd ATP title by defeating Australia’s Alex de Minaur in the Beijing final.
The Shanghai Masters, which has a prize fund of more than $9.4 million, ends on October 18.
