Hyderabad's common transport pass draws criticism over cost and coverage

Hyderabad commuters quoted by The Hindu have questioned whether the city's new combined bus and metro pass offers enough value. Their criticism focuses on its ₹400 daily price, ₹8,500 monthly price and the cost of completing journeys beyond stations and bus stops.

Hyderabad Metro Rail's published terms confirm unlimited travel on the metro and eligible TGSRTC city buses within the Outer Ring Road, excluding Pushpak airport services. The monthly pass lasts 30 calendar days, including the purchase date. A ₹100 refundable card deposit raises the initial payment to ₹500 for a daily pass or ₹8,600 for a monthly one. The deposit is returned when an undamaged, functioning card is surrendered under the applicable process.

The Hindu's report highlights the absence of suburban MMTS trains and feeder services such as shared autos from the combined product. One passenger argued that the monthly price should instead be ₹2,500–₹3,500 and include the final part of the journey. Another called for better connections to neighbourhoods several kilometres from major stations. Those comments express individual preferences, rather than evidence of a representative citywide response.

The report also notes that women already entitled to free bus travel under the Mahalakshmi scheme may see less reason to buy the pass unless they regularly use the metro. A single payment product therefore has different value for different travellers, depending on which services they use and what they would otherwise pay.

The criticism raises a distinction between combining tickets and connecting an entire journey. The pass integrates access to two systems, while the reported concerns involve suburban rail, feeder routes and coordination among operators. Neither the official conditions nor the article announces a reduction in the pass price or the addition of those services.
