Italian President Sergio Mattarella has pardoned three people. One partial pardon went to jeweller Guido Gianni, who is serving a sentence for killing two men during a robbery and attempting to kill a third.
Justice Minister Carlo Nordio supported all three measures after the required review, the presidential office said. Two decrees partially reduce prison terms. The third pardons the remaining five years, five months and 10 days of a seven-year sentence.
Gianni, born in 1960, was sentenced to 12 years and four months for two murders and attempted murder during a 2008 robbery at his jewellery shop. Mattarella reduced his sentence by three years and two months. Gianni had already served five years and three months. His remaining term is under four years, allowing the supervisory court to consider probation with community service.
The third decree concerns a person convicted of drug-related offences committed between 2002 and 2009. The pardon reduces the remaining sentence by one year and nine months. The president cited the person’s rehabilitation and the health of his minor daughter. All measures followed favourable opinions from judges and, in the first case, two competent judicial authorities.
