Ivanova wins world judo bronze in Baku

Russia’s Mariia Ivanova won bronze in the over-78kg category at the world judo championships in Baku. She defeated Italy’s Asya Tavano in the medal contest on October 10.

Ivanova had lost her semifinal to France’s Romane Dicko, ending her bid for gold. Her bronze-medal opponent was decided by Tavano’s contest against Brazil’s Beatriz Souza. Tavano won that bout before losing to Ivanova, according to the official IJF draw.

South Korea’s Hyeonji Lee took gold by defeating Dicko in the final. Israel’s Raz Hershko won the other bronze medal. Ivanova therefore finished on the podium despite her semifinal defeat.

The championships run in Azerbaijan’s capital from October 4 to 11. Individual competition concluded on October 10, with the mixed team event scheduled for October 11. Russia is competing under its national flag and anthem.
