Kharge criticises Delhi detentions ahead of election protest

Indian National Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused Narendra Modi’s government of suppressing democratic freedoms on October 10 following detentions ahead of a Delhi protest. The Hindu and PTI reported his statement on X.
Kharge alleged that police were detaining young people, students, lawyers, journalists, social activists, farm-union representatives and online creators who questioned the government. He also accused the BJP and RSS of fearing the protesters.
He argued that detention and force would not stop citizens participating in politics. Kharge linked young people’s role in the current protests to their involvement in India’s independence struggle.
The Congress president pledged to work with other opposition parties to defend democracy, the Constitution and fundamental rights. These statements reflect Kharge’s political assessment.
Police denied the Cockroach Janta Party permission to demonstrate at Jantar Mantar, citing security and procedural requirements. The Hindu reported more than 500 detentions as people attempted to reach the protest site.
Organisers targeted Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of voter-list manipulation during the Special Intensive Revision and changes involving Form 6 for voter registration. Those allegations remain the protesters’ claims.
