Murashko lists risk factors for venous thrombosis

Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko presented risk factors for venous thromboembolism on October 10 at the fourth national congress marking Russia’s thrombosis awareness day, RIA Novosti reported.
His presentation listed previous venous thromboembolism, chronic heart failure, older age, varicose veins and obesity among predisposing factors. It also included immobility or paresis and myeloproliferative disorders.
Other listed factors were pregnancy and the postpartum period, inherited or acquired thrombophilia, hormone therapy and kidney failure.
The minister separately identified provoking circumstances: surgery, trauma, acute medical illness, heart or acute respiratory failure, and central venous catheterization.
CDC likewise identifies surgery, injury, reduced mobility, obesity, pregnancy and some chronic illnesses as risk factors for venous blood clots. A risk factor does not mean thrombosis will necessarily occur. Individual risk assessment and preventive choices depend on the patient’s condition.
