Khanty-Mansiysk opens digital climate-data laboratory

A digital environmental and climate-data laboratory opened in Khanty-Mansiysk to study carbon balances, Governor Ruslan Kukharuk announced on October 9. Project participants confirmed the launch.
Gazprom Neft and its Salym Petroleum Development subsidiary developed it with Russia’s science ministry and Yugra State University. Participants describe it as Russia’s first digital laboratory of this type, designed to process and validate greenhouse-gas measurements.
Data will come from Mukhrino station, Kondinskie Lakes nature park and a complex at Vadelipskoye field. A station in Numto nature park is planned to join later. Measurements will assess ecosystems’ carbon absorption and emissions.
The facility will also train environmental and climate specialists. Kukharuk linked it to economic adaptation to climate change. Its opening does not itself establish a measured emissions reduction.
