Lahore High Court requests report on Imran Khan sisters’ jail conditions

The court considered relatives’ applications Oct. 9 and sought information about the delivery of essential items. The next hearing was set for Oct. 12.

Justice Abher Gul Khan considered supplementary applications concerning Aleema Khan, Noreen Niazi and Dr Uzma Khan, Dawn reported. The sisters of PTI founder Imran Khan are being held under the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance.

Lawyer Rana Mudassar Umar said the provision of medicines and clothing remained unresolved 19 days after their detention. The judge observed that Aleema had received those items. The lawyer replied that they had been supplied only following court orders. Those were the participants’ positions as reported by the newspaper.

The lawyer also requested permission to supply books and food. The judge asked him to specify the items required, explaining that only court-approved articles would be allowed into the prison. She said reports would be sought from the jail superintendent on the applications.

The lawyer additionally requested consideration of the main petition challenging preventive detention. The judge indicated that it could be taken up after the essential items had been delivered and asked counsel to decide which applications to pursue first.

Noreen Niazi and Dr Uzma Khan were detained for 30 days on Sept. 21, a day after Aleema Khan. Dawn reported that the court had declined Sept. 24 to immediately suspend the detention notices for Noreen and Uzma. Further consideration of the supplementary applications was adjourned until Oct. 12.
