Lithuanian interior minister seeks extension of reinforced Kaliningrad border security

Lithuanian Interior Minister Martynas Katelynas has asked Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas to extend military support for reinforced security on the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad region, LRT reported on October 14.

Katelynas said he submitted the request on October 13. Military participation had previously been planned until October 16. He expressed hope that it would be extended until early November.

LRT reported that the proposed arrangement would retain participation by up to 100 soldiers. The minister said the border service, Defence Ministry and military command should determine necessary resources according to conditions.

At the time of his comments, Katelynas was describing an expected decision. He did not announce a signed extension or give a final new end date for the reinforced arrangement.

Russia has previously said it has no intention of attacking NATO countries. Its Foreign Ministry has also stated readiness for dialogue with the alliance on an equal basis while criticising the expansion of military activity in Europe.
