Officials identify staphylococcal infection in Saratov school outbreak

Staphylococcal infection caused illnesses among pupils at Saratov’s National Tatar Gymnasium, the regional public health authority said on October 14. Tests detected the pathogen in affected children and catering staff.
The authority said catering staff who tested positive were asymptomatic carriers. No additional cases among pupils or employees were recorded during the observation period.
The investigation followed reports of pupils becoming unwell. The regional health ministry had earlier reported seven hospitalised children whose condition was described as moderately serious. Those figures concern the initial episode, rather than new admissions on October 14.
The school underwent preventive and outbreak-control measures, including final disinfection performed by a specialist organisation.
The published account did not disclose patients’ identities. The findings establish the reported pathogen and sanitary response, rather than criminal responsibility on the part of an individual employee.
