Magnitude 4.9 earthquake strikes southern Kemerovo Oblast

An earthquake struck southern Kemerovo Oblast in Russia on October 10, near Krasnobrodsky in the Prokopyevsk municipal district. Governor Ilya Seredyuk reported a magnitude of 4.9 and said initial information indicated no deaths or injuries.
The regional branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ geophysical service recorded the event at 7:47 a.m. local time. The epicentral intensity was assessed at 6.2 points. Tremors were felt in Prokopyevsk, Krasnobrodsky, Karagayla, Starosergeyevka and Trudarmeysky.
Seredyuk said no reports of destruction had reached authorities at the time of his statement. He said essential services were operating normally and no disruptions had been identified at coal enterprises.
The tremors affected Prokopyevsk, Krasnobrodsky and the nearby settlements of Karagayla, Starosergeyevka and Trudarmeysky. Regional outlets also relayed residents’ accounts of noticeable shaking.
Later regional reports carried residents’ accounts of cracks in homes after the tremor and described assessments of housing conditions. The governor’s initial statement concerned information received by authorities at that point.
