A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Kamchatka. The Kamchatka branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Geophysical Survey said the epicentre was 79 kilometres from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a depth of 56.8 kilometres. The tremor was recorded at 00:30 GMT (12:30 local time and 03:30 Moscow time). The epicentre’s coordinates were 52.8656 degrees north and 159.7360 degrees east.
Scientists said shaking in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky reached an intensity of up to five points. No casualties or damage had been reported, and no tsunami threat was declared.
