Seismic activity was recorded east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Seismologists placed the epicentre in Avacha Bay; no casualties or damage had been reported.
A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck off southeastern Kamchatka on October 7. The Kamchatka branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Geophysical Survey recorded the tremor at 12:30 local time. The epicentre was about 79 kilometres east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, with the focus at a depth of 56.8 kilometres.
Interfax, citing the Kamchatka branch, reported that the earthquake occurred in Avacha Bay. Lenta.ru said there were no reports of casualties or damage.
A magnitude 5.9 earthquake was also recorded near the Kuril Islands the previous day. Its epicentre was 265 kilometres south of Severo-Kurilsk, with the focus at a depth of 26 kilometres. No casualties were reported in that event either.
