Marseille bans gatherings and demonstrations on October 19

The Bouches-du-Rhône police prefecture banned gatherings and demonstrations throughout Marseille on October 19, from 12:00 to 20:00, regional outlet Maritima reported.

The restriction follows unrest on October 17, when clashes and shop looting took place in the city centre. Authorities say the measure is intended to prevent renewed clashes and protect people and property.

According to Maritima, police will enforce the ban near shopping areas and on major streets. People taking part in unauthorised gatherings may face fines or detention.
