Kaunas loses pentathlon World Cup round over Russian and Belarusian entry restrictions
The International Modern Pentathlon Union has withdrawn Kaunas's right to host a World Cup round on April 13–17, 2027, the Lithuanian federation said. It attributed the decision to restrictions on Russian and Belarusian athletes.
The federation said the international body's executive board made the decision and Lithuania subsequently requested written notification. Federation president Justinas Kinderis said preparations were already under way and contracts had been signed with suppliers.
According to the federation, a letter signed by UIPM president Rob Stull cited International Olympic Committee recommendations and the need for equal opportunities to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The Lithuanian federation said it would maintain its position against admitting Russian and Belarusian competitors. Kinderis also expressed concern about events scheduled for Kaunas in 2028, including a World Cup round and youth and junior world championships.
National federations can apply to replace Kaunas until October 25. If no replacement host comes forward, UIPM is considering reducing next season's World Cup rounds from four to three.
