Lionel Messi played his final match for Argentina as the team beat Benin 3-0 at Buenos Aires’ Monumental Stadium. About 85,000 spectators watched the game.

Messi converted a penalty and set up two goals. After the final whistle, he thanked the fans and his teammates, saying he was proud to be Argentine and would miss playing at home. Argentine broadcaster C5N reported his remarks.

The farewell appearance was Messi’s 208th for the national team. He has scored 126 goals and made 69 assists for Argentina. He made his debut in August 2005.

The Argentine Football Association confirmed the Benin match was the captain’s final appearance for the national team before a home crowd. The association said Messi scored Argentina’s third goal after Nicolás Otamendi and Nicolás Paz had put the hosts ahead.
