Missing Melbourne hiker Jordan Yap found dead in Peru

The family of Jordan Yap, a 30-year-old Melbourne man, has confirmed that he was found dead in Peru. He disappeared in September during a solo trek through the Huayhuash mountain range.

Yap set out on September 14 and told loved ones he would be out of contact for about 10 days. His partner Anita raised the alarm after he failed to check into a hotel and missed a scheduled flight.

The family organised a search with local mountain rescue organisation Socorro Andino Peruano. Relatives thanked rescuers, police and others who helped look for him.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian who died in Peru. ABC also confirmed Yap's body had been found, citing notification of his loved ones by local authorities.

His family described him as a keen traveller who had previously hiked alone in Australia, China, Turkey and Jordan. The reports did not give a cause of death.
