Murashko links diabetes and obesity to higher thrombosis risk

Patients with both diabetes and obesity face a risk of thrombotic complications more than 1.5 times the population average, Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko said on October 10.
He spoke to reporters at the fourth national congress with international participation, Thrombosis Prevention Day in Russia. His estimate concerns the combination of the two conditions, rather than either diagnosis considered separately.
Murashko said that among people with diabetes who do not have excess weight, the risk of such complications falls to nearly the population average. He contrasted those groups to emphasise the importance of accompanying factors in assessing a patient’s condition.
He added that other illnesses, including infections, can worsen the course of the underlying disease. In his view, the treating physician should assess these factors together. The statement describes a general risk assessment rather than an individual medical decision for a particular patient.
