Germany maintains Russia sanctions after Trump's diesel announcement
Trump’s Russian diesel deal won’t change US oil markets much: Analysis

Germany said on October 10 that it would maintain sanctions against Russia and work with European partners on further measures. The statement followed Donald Trump's announcement of a temporary lifting of US restrictions on Russian fuel.

Government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius said Berlin had noted the US decision concerning Russian diesel deliveries. Germany's sanctions position remained unchanged, he said. Berlin did not announce a lifting of European restrictions.

Kornelius also said support for Ukraine was unchanged and diplomatic efforts to find a solution would continue. Chancellor Friedrich Merz has repeatedly said Germany would not reduce its assistance to Kyiv.

On October 9, Trump said Russia had agreed to supply diesel to global markets to lower prices. He presented temporary US sanctions relief as part of that arrangement. Germany's response makes clear that Washington's decision does not represent a corresponding shift in Berlin's policy.
