Murmansk snowfall prompts icy-road warning and winter-tyre appeal

Snow fell in Murmansk on October 10, leaving a thin layer on streets, pavements and vehicles. City authorities urged drivers to fit winter tyres as forecasters warned of possible icy roads across the region.
RIA Novosti and local media reported the snowfall. Mayor Ivan Lebedev appealed to motorists to replace summer tyres soon. The temperature in Murmansk was one degree Celsius on the evening of October 10.
The regional weather centre forecast precipitation and locally strong, gusty winds over the weekend as a cyclone moved northeast from the Gulf of Finland towards the Arkhangelsk region and Kara Sea. Daytime temperatures were expected to range from minus one to plus four degrees Celsius.
An anticyclone was forecast to spread from northern Scandinavia to the Kola Peninsula on October 12. Forecasters expected precipitation to stop, with sub-zero temperatures overnight and daytime readings remaining between minus one and plus four degrees.
