Other Mommy leads North American box office with $27.5 million debut
The horror film Other Mommy led the North American box office with an estimated $27.5 million opening weekend, according to studio figures released on October 11.
Universal Pictures released the Jessica Chastain film in 3,365 theatres. It follows a young girl threatened by a supernatural creature that resembles her mother. Its reported production budget was about $19 million, excluding any additional distribution or marketing costs.
Despite its leading ticket sales, opening-night audiences gave it a D+ CinemaScore. Its launch in 50 international markets brought the estimated worldwide debut to $45.2 million.
Verity placed second in North America with $11.5 million, followed by Resident Evil with $8.4 million and Heart of the Beast with $7.1 million. The Social Reckoning opened fifth with $5.5 million.
These are provisional Friday-to-Sunday ticket-sales estimates for the United States and Canada. Final domestic figures were due on Monday, so the reported totals could be revised. The opening gross alone does not establish whether a film has made a profit.
