Fernandez beats Alexandrova in three sets in Wuhan opener
Leylah Fernandez defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the first round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Wuhan on Oct. 12. The match lasted two hours and 27 minutes.
Alexandrova, ranked 28th, recovered from losing the opening set to level the contest but could not sustain that turnaround in the decider. Fernandez, ranked 26th, took the third set and advanced to the second round.
The Canadian converted six of nine break points, while Alexandrova took only five of 19 opportunities to break serve. Those figures show that the Russian created more chances but used a much smaller share of them.
Fernandez also led the ace count eight to one. She made five double faults compared with Alexandrova's eight. Fernandez's next opponent will be the winner of the match between the Philippines' Alexandra Eala and China's Han Xi.
