Protesters enter Albania’s Economy Ministry in Tirana

Protesters entered Albania's Economy Ministry in Tirana and began removing furniture and office equipment, Albanian Daily News reported on October 15.

According to the outlet, the entry followed more than ten hours of demonstrations and confrontations in the capital. Items removed from the ministry included printers. Windows were also smashed at the Central Election Commission headquarters.

Police used tear gas and water cannon during the day. Local media reported fires and damage to banks, shops and other buildings in central Tirana.

State Police Director Skender Hita said on October 15 that 71 officers had been injured during three days of protests. His figure covered a 72-hour period rather than the incident at the ministry alone.

The protests began with demands for better university conditions and employment prospects. Demonstrators also called for Prime Minister Edi Rama's resignation, which he rejected.

Russia's embassy in Albania urged Russian nationals in the country on October 15 to avoid crowded gathering places.
