Rubio promises Japan cooperation in Okinawa murder investigation
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio pledged cooperation with Japanese authorities investigating the killing of a woman in Okinawa during an October 10 call with Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.
Rubio conveyed condolences and promised full cooperation with the Japanese government and local investigators, according to a State Department statement cited by Reuters. Japan's Foreign Ministry said the ministers also agreed to consult on effective measures to prevent similar incidents.
Devin Jacob Ballard, a US Marine stationed at Futenma air station, was arrested on October 4 on suspicion of robbing and murdering Anna Yagi, 39, at a hotel in Naha, Reuters reported, citing local police. The allegations have not been established by a court.
The case prompted protests against the US military presence. Personnel on Okinawa were placed under a monthlong overnight curfew and alcohol restrictions, with mandatory discipline training. Rubio's commitment adds a diplomatic response to Japan's demands over the investigation.
