Rwanda and the International Automobile Federation have reached an agreement to stage a Formula One race, government and FIA sources told AFP. The decision has not been officially announced, and media reports say the event could take place in 2030.
Government sources told AFP that Rwanda’s bid to host a Grand Prix had been approved and an agreement reached. An announcement is expected next week in the capital, Kigali. Neither Rwanda nor the FIA has publicly confirmed the decision.
If the race goes ahead, Formula One would return to Africa for the first time since 1993, when it held a race at Kyalami in South Africa. The calendar for next season is already set, and Rwanda’s debut is not expected before 2030.
Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton has previously called for Formula One to return to the continent. At the start of the season, he said he had been working behind the scenes for six or seven years to bring a Grand Prix to Africa.
