Death toll in renewed Manipur violence rises to nine

The death toll in renewed violence in India’s Manipur state has reached nine. Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh urged communities to exercise restraint and ordered authorities to restore order.

On October 11, The Hindu and The Indian Express put the death toll at nine. Attacks and clashes occurred on October 9 and 10 in Kamjong, Ukhrul and Kangpokpi districts. Additional security personnel were sent to the worst-hit areas of Kamjong and Kangpokpi.

The Hindu reported that the latest violence began after a 22-year-old woman was shot dead in Chassad village on October 9. Exchanges of fire followed between Kuki and Naga armed groups. A 42-year-old man was killed and ten houses were burned during the clashes. Restrictive orders were imposed in the village.

Subsequent attacks in Kangpokpi killed two village guards and another person. A Naga civil society organisation reported a further villager’s killing. Officials said two people were killed in Ningchou village in Kamjong, while another man was killed in Ukhrul.

Singh condemned the deaths of civilians and called on communities to prioritise dialogue. The Hindu reported that violence between Kuki and Naga groups has killed more than 40 people in the state since February 2026.
