The Hindu reports at least five killed in renewed Manipur violence

At least five people were killed in separate clashes and attacks in India's Manipur state from the evening of October 9, The Hindu reports.

The newspaper says two Kuki community members died during gunfire near Chassad village in Kamjong district that continued into October 10. A Tangkhul Naga organisation reported two more civilian deaths in an attack on Ningchou village.

In Ukhrul district, the newspaper reports that 40-year-old farmer Sandeep Rai was shot while driving on the Mahadev–Talui road. Reports of two additional deaths involving alleged armed-group members were not officially confirmed and are excluded from the minimum toll.

Naga and Kuki organisations have made competing allegations. Naga representatives blame armed Kuki groups for attacks, while Kuki organisations accuse Indian Reserve Battalion personnel and a faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim. Manipur deputy chief minister Nemcha Kipgen condemned the civilian killings.
