Sweden proposes military contingents for NATO operations in 2027

The government has submitted a parliamentary proposal setting personnel ceilings for Sweden’s land, maritime and air contributions to NATO’s collective defence.

The document published on October 13 seeks authorisation for up to 3,900 personnel in land operations, 850 in maritime operations and 600 in air operations. Those ceilings add up to 5,350 personnel. RIA Novosti rounded its overall estimate to 5,500.

Land units would contribute to NATO’s multinational brigades in Latvia and Finland. Maritime forces would participate in the alliance’s standing groups in the North Atlantic. The proposal also covers contributions to air defence and other operations in the North Atlantic region.

The government is asking for authorisation through December 31, 2027. This is a proposal to parliament, rather than an announcement that all the personnel concerned have already been deployed abroad. Sweden joined NATO in 2024.
