T1 estimates annualised bank operational losses at 28.7 billion rubles

Annualised operational losses reported by banks using the Orix service totalled 28.7 billion rubles based on first-half 2026 data, IT group T1 said. The estimate was almost half the 2025 figure despite a rise in incident numbers.
The figure extrapolates first-half data to a full year. It does not represent losses already incurred throughout 2026. Eighteen banks currently provide data. Operational risks include process errors, employee actions, information-system failures and external events.
Retail banking accounted for about 70% of direct losses, an increase of 10 percentage points. Annualised incident numbers rose 5%, but average damage declined. The average loss from large incidents fell 40%, while their number fell 35%.
The five largest losses accounted for 16% of direct losses in the first half of 2026, down from 28% at the end of 2025. External fraud accounted for 37%, compared with roughly 40% in previous years. Average damage per fraud incident fell 43% to 118,000 rubles from 208,000.
Direct information-security losses fell 62%. Events unrelated to money transfers accounted for 53.8% of that category. T1 linked the changes to stronger protections against social engineering. This is the company’s explanation rather than an independently established cause.
Since Orix launched in 2022, more than six million direct-loss incidents totalling 203.9 billion rubles have been recorded. Those cumulative figures cover the service’s entire history.
